Moon Dust-DNA Watch Made From Actual Moon Dust and Parts From Apollo 11

Romain Jerome's Titanic DNA Watch was such a success that the company has decided to take the concept to the moon (literally) with their new Moon Dust DNA watch. Like the Titanic version, the moon watch will feature actual artifacts. The face includes dust from a rock retrieved during our first mission to the moon, the case is made from steel from the Apollo 11 spacecraft and the strap will be made up of fibers from a spacesuit worn during the ISS mission. Okay, that...is...awesome. But now for the sticker shock—a symbolic quantity of 1969 watches will be made to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. Several different versions will be available at prices that range from $15,000 to $500,000 apiece.

Warp!!2 makes Linux OS boot in 2.97 seconds

Software engineers at Japan's embedded Linux software vendor Lineo announced technology last week that can boot a low-power computer system within 2.97 seconds. Warp!!2 consists of a boot loader, a customized Linux software stack, and a 'hibernation driver'. The hibernation driver is Lineo's innovation, which is capable of writing a snapshot of the RAM into flash memory instead of to a hard drive. New features in Warp!!2 include the requirement for smaller memory size than its predecessor. For instance, on an Armadillo-500 demo board, the memory size to save a snapshot had been reduced to 19 MB from 32 MB. The low memory requirement is made possible because Warp!!2 supports snapshot compression, which is capable of compressing a snapshot data to almost half of its original size. In addition, to this Warp!!2 also supports multiple snapshots handling. Warp!!2 is also capable of saving multiple alternative system snapshots, thus enabling users to reboot either to a previously saved session or into a clean startup environment.
A Warp!!2 enabled Linux system with an uncompressed snapshot of 18.3 MB takes about 2.97 seconds to boot, while the same system with a compressed snapshot of 6.8 MB takes about 3.17 seconds to boot. Warp!!2 could also appeal to Netbook manufacturers who ship most of their products with Linux. For Warp!!2 enabled Netbooks would result in light-weight and fast booting devices, which is surely a dream come true.

USB3.0 - transfer 250 albums a minute

Some interesting revelations were made this week at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) 2008, which point to just how powerful USB3.0 technology is going to be.
At the conference, USB-IF President Jeff Ravencraft let slip some details on the download speeds that we can expect from the technology.
In his speech he announced that USB3.0 will be able to hit transfer times of 5GB a second – which equates to around 250 music albums a minute, or if you're a movie buff around 50 full-length films.
To put this into context: if you were to download 25GB of info via USB 1.1, you would be looking at a time of 9.3 hours; on USB2.0, it would take about 14 minutes.
Compatible with Vista
It was also revealed at the conference that the creators of USB3.0 (or SuperSpeed USB as it is also known) are still in negotiation to determine what operating systems will get the technology.
Lars Giusti of Microsoft commented: "The Microsoft USB core team is currently evaluating which operating systems we should support USB 3.0 on. It's a difficult decision and a difficult choice because there are all these moving parts," said Giusti.
"Our early indications tell us that most partners think that we should support USB 3.0 on at least Windows Vista."
It is expected that USB3.0 should rear its head late 2009, early 2010.

Belkin Switch to Mac makes PC to Mac migration a breeze

Although the new cross over cable from Belkin may sound preachy to some it's actually quiet cool. The Belkin Switch to Mac cable is meant to recreate on a Windows machine the Mac's built-in Migration Assistant, which is used to transfer user accounts, applications, network and computer settings, files and volumes between Macs. Migration is also an optional process when initializing a new Mac. The cable comes with the Migration Assistant software for the Windows XP or Vista PC end that will ostensibly move all the default PC folders, settings, and apps to a Mac's default folders in the same way two Macs would. The Belkin's Switch to Mac costs approx $50, the migration process between two directly connected Macs traditionally takes place over IEEE 1394, but with the switch; it's done over USB 2.0.

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System Controller

Nintendo strikes gold again. They took the NES controller and improved the styling and ergonomics by rounding it off. They also added two more face buttons but the big innovation is the addition of two shoulder buttons. I believe the shoulder buttons were added to allow the player to control zooming or rotation in the Super Nintendo's pseudo-3D Mode-7 style graphics.
The impact this controller had is tremendous. Just about every subsequent console controller ever made by any company borrows from this design. You can see this in the chart, and you can also plainly see the similarities in photos of subsequent controllers.
For a long time, this was considered to be pretty much the ideal console controller. The only complaints people had about it were a lack of ergonomics and the fact that it didn't have enough face buttons to play fighting games like Street Fighter II.
